It didn’t take long for a heavy weight match to materialize in early U.S. Amateur Championship action.  After dispatching of their opponents in the 1st Round, former champions Henry Brodt and Raymond Linares squared-off.

The match opened in the 8-Ball set with Linares riding an early run to a 3-0 lead before Brodt could get on the board.  Linares would go on to take four of the five games of 8-Ball.

In the 9-Ball set, Linares again jumped out to a quick lead.  Just as the match looked but over, a suddenly energized Brodt roared back with three straight wins to pull within a game of Linares.

Linares moved to-the-hill in the fifth game of 9-Ball with a crucial win.  Again though, Brodt stole the sixth game, to pull back within one.

Unfortunately for Brodt, his comeback attempt would end their as he fell 7-5 to Linares in the seventh and final game of 9-Ball.

The loss sent Brodt to the one-loss side of the bracket, while Linares advanced to yet another “showdown of champions,” taking on defending champion Brian Parks.
