I am buying a new cue. What should I do to the tip before I chalk up for the first time? Should it be smooth? Should it have the little stringy bits of leather all over it? – Waverly, KS
Make sure the tip is able to hold
chalk. That is the big thing and after you play a little with
the new tip it will mushroom a little. I would take it to
your local pro shop and let them work the tip so the edges
don't get in the way of your aim. – Ray
I am a pretty frequent player looking to get more serious into the game, I need a new cue and have around a $50 target for a one. What would you suggest as a good pool cue? – Boise, ID
$50 is a lot of money, but not for a pool
cue. I would save up around $200 and that way you are able
to buy a cue that will help your game and you want be buying
a cue that won't last. The wood used in lower end cues warp
and the glue doesn't hold. – Ray
I replace my own tips on my Meucci cue, but I always end up scratching the soft ferrule when I'm sanding off the excess tip on the side. Is there any way to avoid it? – Bohemia, NY
The Meucci ferrule is really soft and the
only way is to use a utility knife and cue the side down or
get a lathe. – Ray
We
are moving. The price to have someone to move our table to
our new house is out of our budget right now. The table will
have to be stored in the garage until the game room is completed.
I need some tips on moving the table, so I do not mess it
up. – Moreno Valley, CA
I know it costs a lot to move or set up a table, but if you
can find a way to let a professional, please do. Here are
the basics. You need to take off the rails first, than remove
the table cloth, if you plan on reusing the cloth be very
careful not to rip the cloth when removing the staples. Once
you expose the slate, mark the head or break end of the table
on the slate and just under the slate on the table. Then go
to the middle pocket and use a maker to draw an arched line
for one corner pocket to the other corner pocket making sure
to cross over each joint of the three slates. Remove the slate.
When you get the slate off of the table you pretty much have
it beat. Make sure you put all hardware in a bag for ready
use when you have the table put in your new home. When storing
the table make sure the wood isn't down where it may come
into contact with anything wet. The slate should be placed
on two strips of wood to keep it from contact with the floor.
Please have a pro set the table up if you can. – Ray
What exactly is an IMPLEX joint and how does it help give action to the cue ball? – Hartford, CT
An implex joint is a soft joint like plastic
or linen base material. It lets the cue whip more putting
more English on the cue ball. – Ray
I am beginning to put on my own tips. When I trim the tip I have no way of burnishing it. Do you know any way that I can burnish the tips? – Tifton, GA
Get a piece of leather and stroke the leather against the tip. I like to use a little water and it will brown a little faster. After you use the leather try a dollar bill to finish. – Ray
Are there any special techniques or tips you have about shooting long or straight-in shots off the rail? Is there a different type of bridge to use when shooting off the rail? – Carbondale, IL
Speed is everything on this type of shot. You need to stay down and try not to over shoot the ball, take what the shot gives you. I like to use an open bridge with the tips of my fingers touching the rail. The best thing to do on any shot is to get comfortable and pocket the ball. If the cue and object ball are touching the rail on the right side of the table and you are straight in going to the corner pocket, use low right hand English. This will keep the cue ball on the rail and help pocket the object ball. – Ray
Does practicing on 9ft regulation tables have any advantages or disadvantages when competing in weekly APA league play on 3 1/2 x 7 bar tables? – Myrtle Beach, SC
Anytime you have a chance to practice on
the 9 footers do it. You get used to shooting longer shots
and the table looks easier when you drop down to the bar tables.
The big table helps you develop a better stroke to move the
cue ball around. – Ray
What is the difference in the play, when using dime or nickel shape? – Ecuador
The dime might let you draw the cue ball easier, the jump shot or the masse shot really isn't affected. The dime shape will also cause you to miss cue a little more. I like to keep my tip about a nickel and trimmed around the ferrule. – Ray
For our senior center, we have 9 ft.tables, and are trying to level them. Is this done by adjustable leg levelers or does it have to be done with shims somehow? Please explain the procedure. – Toms River, NJ
You should be able to level the tables by
the legs, if the tables have been in the same location for
a while and the joints of the slates still match you can use
the legs to level the tables. Get a level, place it long ways
on the table bring up the low end to level. After you have
the long end of table place the level across the spot side
to side and bring up the low corner repeat at other end. –
Ray
How does the Le Pro tip compare with the Triangle
tip that you use? – Charlotte, NC
The Le Pro is a one piece tip. It is cut from one thickness of leather. The triangle is ground down and glued back to shape. This helps it be more consistent throughout its life. The Le Pro is a very good tip, but I've found them to get hard the longer I play. – Ray
I was wondering if you knew anything about ivory cue balls versus the cue balls of today? – Lincoln, IL
Not much, I know they used ivory in the old days because they didn't have a product that was better for making pool balls like we have today. – Ray
I am a somewhat new player in an APA 9-ball League.
I want to purchase a new cue in the $200 range. What kind
of cue would you recommend? – Tacoma, WA
I’ll give you the same info I give everyone. Hit balls with other players cue see if you like steel jointed or implex jointed cues. Being new to the game you would probably be better off with a softer jointed cue. This will help you move the cue ball around better. – Ray
Do you know where to find a cue ball with the 6 red
dots on it like in the tournaments on ESPN? I like to work
on English and it seems easier to tell with that type of ball.
– Kalamazoo, MI
Try ACCUstats or contact the BCA (Billiards Congress of America) they would have a good ideal where to buy the cue ball. In the practice game Target Pool they have a cue ball with line markings it might work for you. – Ray
I’m starting to take pool
a little more serious and I am wondering what the difference
is between 18, 19, 20 and 21 oz cues; does the weight matter?
– Newark, NJ
Weight is up to the player, feel is everything in pool. Just
go with what feels best to you. – Ray
I have a very old 9', extra thick 3-piece slate table
with ball return. What are the best resources to find out
who manufactured this table? – Chicago, IL
Sometimes they have markings under the table, if this doesn't
help take some pictures of the table and send them to Brunswick
or the BCA I'm sure they would be able to ID the table. –
Ray
What are the pros and cons of titanium, graphite,
and maple as shaft? – Louisa, VA
It all has to do with feel. I could list a lot of pros and cons but what it all gets down to, is the cue a good cue for me? I like the wood shafts; it gives me the ability to feel the shot. – Ray
Many of my friends who are very good players mostly play on 7 ft bar tables, they believe you should play on the same table at home as you play in league. After reading answers to many of your questions, I feel the Gold Crown IV would make me a better player. Please tell me what your thoughts are, and will the 9-foot table improve my play overall for the future? – Severn, MD
It's like this, if you are used to shooting 5 and 6 foot shots on the bigger table it will be better for you on the bar table. A 5 foot shot is pretty common on a big table, the same shot is a long shot on a bar table. The best bar table player in the world are the big table players; Shannon "The Canon", Johnny Archer and a list of others. – Ray
I've been looking at purchasing a new cue and I was
wondering the importance of the tip. I've seen a Viking with
a hard tip and a Meucci with a medium-hard tip. I assume that
they run down all the way to soft. What would be the advantages
to the various tips? Does a softer tip hold the cue ball better?
– Greer, SC
The tip should match your type
of game. If you like to spin a ball use a softer tip. I like
to pound the cue ball, so I use a harder tip. The better you
strike the cue ball the harder the tip you are able to use.
Hard tips might miscue a little more. – Ray
I'm six foot one, my cue is a standard 58 inches, my arm is the length of the shaft. Someone was telling about the length of it and how tall you are and what the length should be. Is this the right size for me? - Detroit, MI
Your cue should be fine for you. If you want, have a shaft made one inch longer and see if the longer shaft frees up your stroke. I don't justify a longer cue until the player is about 6'4". I know a lot of good player 6'3' 6'4" using 58" cues. - Ray
I've recently acquired a cue stick. It is a pretty good shooting stick and I like it. My question is how do I tell the difference between a shooting cue and a breaking cue? - Laurinburg, NC
If you like the line the cue is able to put on the cue ball with an open stroke it is a pretty good break cue. Sometimes is hard to find a cue you can hit with a hard stroke time after time. - Ray
Does the cue ball weigh more than the other balls? What is the weight of the balls? - Kansas City, MO
A pool ball weight is 5.5 to 6 oz. The better the set of ball the more consistent the weight will be for each ball. There is a weight range on most sets of balls. You will see a plus and minus 4 -8 grams for each ball. Some sets of balls the cue ball will weigh more but on the top quality sets the cue ball will be in the same plus or minus. - Ray
I just purchased a used 9 ft. Connelly table and put new felt
and new rails on it. I noticed that I am not able to draw
the ball as far as I am accustomed to. What is the probable
cause? Also, I want to buy a cue stick in the $200 range.
What do you suggest? - Stamford, CT
The cloth may have more drag on the cue ball. Simonis cloth makes it easier to move the cue ball. Don't buy a cue on name brand only; you have a lot of cues to choose from in that price range. Try to hit balls with as many cues you can before you buy. Make your purchase because the cue feels good in your hand and when you hit balls. - Ray
I want to buy a pool stick and be able to break with it. Do you have any suggestions on one? - Hampton, VA
Is this cue also a playing cue? The reason people started breaking with different cues is that the tips get hard from the heavy impact of the break shot. This will cause you to miss cue more and change the hit of your cue. I like my break cue to be set up with the same joint material and weight as my playing cue. If you want a cue to do both break and play, try to find a cue with a stainless steel joint and get a tip tool so you can condition the tip when you see the tip getting a glassed look when you chalk up. - Ray
I am looking to purchase a new cue. I currently play with
a Mike Sigel unlimited, w/ a morrie tip. I like the hit I
get with it, the cue is in need of repair. I am looking at
the Shuler Cues, which say they have the best joint, I was
wondering if you ever heard of them and if you would recommend
them? - Philadelphia, PA
Yes, I know the cue and it is a very good brand. If you like the hit of the Sigel cue you might make a better choice if you buy a cue with the same type joint. There is a young cue maker in my area and if you want a big pin flat face jointed cue, I would recommend Chad Cater. This cue maker is making a great hitting cue and at the time the price is right. - Ray
In the early 1990s there was a product known as Tru Rail
Bank Mirrors. Any idea how to find them now? - Rocky Mount,
NC
Remember the mirrors but I don't have a clue where you would find them. Sorry and good luck on the hunt. - Ray
I've been playing pool for nearly six years and have played in several amateur tournaments. To improve my game, I am considering an upgrade of my cue in order to play with the best possible equipment available. I am thinking of buying a Shon and a Moori soft or medium tip. - NYC
The Shon cue is a very good choice and you wouldn't be settling if you stay with the original shaft. I use Shon and I use the shaft that came with the cue. I had it tapered a little more but it is of high quality. The tip is really up to the type of stroke you have. I like to power balls so I use a harder triangle tip. If you like the Moori tips and like to the power play the harder tip will help your play; you don't want a tip to hard that it doesn't hold chalk. - Ray
I wanted to invest in a good cue I have a budget of $300.
What do you recommend? - Newcastle, NE
That is a good price range to be in. I would try to use some of your buddies' cue to get a feel for the cue you like and then look for something with the same type of wood, joint and tip. - Ray
I see that you use a Schon cue. What do you think about Viking? - Rochester, NH
I was on the Viking pro staff two years ago. Viking makes a very good cue, I'm not sure which pros are playing with Viking but I'm sure they have it up on their web site. - Ray
I recently purchased a pool table and it came with an accessory kit that has tally balls however no rule book. I can't find anything on how to use the tally balls. Do you know of any sites that would have rules for that game? - Ladson, SC
Your guess is as good as mine on this one. I have a question, what are tally balls? - Ray
I need some advice on a pool cue; I have looked on eBay and regular pool cue sites and everything is so expensive. I would like to have a nice cue but don't know what to buy. I am about 5'2" any suggestions. - Carmichaels, PA
Nick Varner has a line of cues from about $50 to $350; that type of cue would be a good starter. If you would like to buy a cue that would help move the cue ball, try a low end Meucci, around $150. Check local pro shops for the Varner line or you can find Meucci on the web. - Ray
Have you tried the BreakRAK for practicing the Break Stroke?
- Bartlesville, OK
I'm not up on the BreakRAK. I like to create my own ways to work on my game. This product may be very good, but I've found most help products to be less than helpful. - Ray
What is the regulation pool cue size? Where would be the best place to get a triangle/rack? - Summersville, MO
Cue size is up to the player. Most cues you buy are 59 inches long. The best place to get a rack would be your local pro shop or department store with a sporting goods section. - Ray
Is there a "rule of thumb" for how long the table
light needs to be on a 9 foot table? - Dunkirk, MD
Yes, you need to make sure the table is lighted on each rail. The angle of the housing of the light will need to allow you to have light touching each rail. Some lights are 90 degrees on the ends and that type of light would have to be as long as your table's playing area. - Ray
What are your favorite brands of cue sticks? - Whitinsville,
MA
I use Schon cues now and like the way a steel jointed cue feels when it makes contact with the cue ball. You have a lot of good cue makers and companies out there making nice playing cues now. There is a young cue maker in my town that makes a great cue. If you would like a cue made for you E-mail me and I'll give you the info on him. - Ray
I am shopping for a 4x8 pool table in the $5 k range; I
noticed the rail width on some models vary from 5 to 6 inches.
Which rail width is the best in your opinion? - Kansas
City, MO
The width is very important and I would go with the widest one. - Ray
What is the difference between hard and soft tips as far as cue ball action or what ever? - Stockbridge, GA
A soft tip will stay on the cue ball longer causing more spin or English. - Ray
How can I level a 3 piece slate table myself? - Mondovi, WI
Start with the base of the table, make sure it is level and then go to the middle slate. After you have the middle slate level; slide each end slate up to the middle slate. If the slate lines aren't flush use shims to match and level. This isn't as easy as you might think if you have the extra money get you local pro shop to help. - Ray
I own a Meucci, and have been playing with it for a while.
I found that the shaft has warped, I'm thinking of getting
a new stick. I like how the Meucci hits, but don't get that
much power. Is there any other cue that hits almost like it?
- Boston, MA
The soft feel is do to the Meucci ferrule and that is trademark to Meucci. If you want more power get one of the dot shafts from Meucci. You will keep the weight of the cue you have now and will be less expensive. - Ray
After reading your suggestions, I would like to buy a Meucci
HP-1 cue; however, I can't decide between a red dot or black
dot shaft. What is the difference and which would you recommend?
- Zionsville, IN
Black dot shafts are layered and the red dot marks the spin of the shaft. The spin is the strongest line in the wood. Meucci claims this will give you a more consistent hit. I wouldn't pay to much attention to the sales pitch and go with the basic shaft. - Ray
Will cold temperatures hurt a pool table? - Mondovi, WI
I would have to say extreme cold would not be good for the wood or slate line. - Ray
Will the play of a pool table be affected by the cold? We have a table in our garage, but its like 40-50 degrees in there most of the time, does it matter? - Mondovi, WI
Yes, the table is made of wood and the cold will expand and contract the wood. - Ray
How do I choose the right size cue? - Jackson, MS
Most cues are 58 inches long. I would ask other players or your friends about their cues and try their cues a few games, by trying other players' cues you'll get a feel for different weights. - Ray
What kind of table would be the best kind to get? I rolled a ball on a Brunswick, and it hit the bumper, and it just slid along, for part of the way back, it didn't just stop and roll the other way, is it supposed to do that? - Mondovi, WI
The new cloth will cause the balls to slide on the Brunswick. I would buy the New Gold Crown if I was in a prefect world. Most tables made today are very similar, it comes down to-what will the dealer do after the sell? Make sure you buy from a dealer that isn't going to place your table take your money and forget your name. - Ray
My wife and I have recently become very interested in playing pool and are in the process of buying a 9 foot table. Does the color of the cloth effect ones perception or "feel" of that table? - Bremerton, WA
It's not coincidence that most tables have green cloth. The color green is the easiest on the eyes over long play. - Ray
When you select a tip for your cue, what would you select
and why? - Independence, MO
I like the Triangle tip, it doesn't mushroom and seems to be more consistent over the life of the tip. With the Triangle I don't miss cue that much even though it is a hard tip. Picking a tip has a lot to do with how hard you stroke through the cue ball. The harder the tip the stronger the stroke needs to be. - Ray
I recently purchased a table and after about 2 months the
table has settled and caused the slate to not match up exactly
at the same height along a 1' section in the middle. On the
other end of the table it is ever so slightly uneven, anyway
these are minor but none the less noticeable and was wondering
if you think it would be worth having them corrected?
- Lexington, SC
You can fix the problem without taking the cloth off. Get a friend to help. Get a shim and look under the table there is a cross member that the slats lay where they come together. Place the shim in the area under the slat and tap it into place. Having your friend tell you when the slates are even on the playing surface. The cloth should last 3 or 4 years, light is a big factor on cloth causing the color the fade and look like you need to replace the cloth. Before you replace the cloth look for pin holes and impact bumps that make the cue ball lose its line. - Ray
What can you tell me about adjustment of the balancing weight in my cue, not just in terms of changing the size of the weight but how will it effect the action of my cue if I keep the existing weight but move it forward or backward a 1/2 inch or so? - Margate City, NJ
Having the balance around 19 inches from the butt will give you more control on the cue ball. If you want the cue ball to move more, move the balance back to 18; this takes the weight of the tip and will give you more spin on the cue call. I would have a player that has trouble drawing the cue ball use a back weighted cue. - Ray
Can I sand a soft tip? - Buchanan, VA
Soft tips can be sanded; the only problem is that they will
have to be replaced more often. - Ray
I have a older Meucci cue and the joint connection has a fracture or crack about 3/4inch long and with the shaft off it does go down to the wood. Should I be concerned? - Gardnerville, NV
The joint is made of plastic and yes, you should be concerned. The cue needs the collar to help the hit and protect the wood. You can have it fixed by a local pro shop or send it to Bob Meucci for the repair. You can find his address or phone number in most billiards magazines. - Ray
Is their a right or wrong way to use a tip tapper? What
do you recommend? I also have a Viking Cue, 21oz. I find it
difficult to put good English on my shots. What can I do to
improve my game? - Fort Collins, CO
I like to use the palm of my hand and work the tapper around the tip holding the tip angle I like to play with. I've seen players tap too and that is OK but I don't like the edges to be rough and tapping sometimes causes that to happen. Now your cue might be too heavy. Try a friends' cue that doesn't weight as much as yours to see if you are able to get your stroke through the cue ball. With a heavy cue it is a little harder to finish your stroke and get the English you want. Playing with heaver cues tends to let the cue do the work not their stroke. - Ray
I saw a special bumper that helps with cue vibration after a hit, know anything about it? - Houston, TX
I like to feel the cue in my hand. I can tell by the feel of the impact if I hit the shot like I wanted. - Ray
I'm in the process of buying an Olhausen, I want a good
price but I don't feel like I'm getting it from my local guy.
Any suggestions on where I can go to get an honest to goodness
fair deal? - Chicago, IL
Look on the Internet, go to the Pool and Billiards Website and look up their message board and ask if they have any prices out there you can compare. - Ray
How do I clean and make a Meucci black dot shaft smooth?
Is the black dot shaft of Meucci any good? - Makati, CA
Use a damp cloth and some fine sand paper to close the wood. Yes, Meucci makes a fine cue. - Ray
I recently purchased 2 commercial tables in which the person I purchased them from taped the slate together. How should I fix this? - Plains, GA
Tape over the slate lines? I really can't help you. I have never seen tape used for holding any part of the slate. If you put a table together you would join the slates by using wax or hard rock putty. The verdict is still out. Go to your local billiards store, they can tell you the best thing to use. - Ray
I'd like to buy a new billiard table for my modest sized 11'2" X 15' rec room. According to room size charts I can either get by with a 7 foot table and a 48 inch cue or an 8 foot and a 42 inch cue. I've often heard "buy as large as you can" even if it means a shorter cue. I'm a 6'2" guy who's returning to billiards after many years who'd like to play for relaxation and possibly sharpen his game. Any thoughts? - St. Louis, MO
I wouldn't buy a table if that is your only option. You really would get tried of playing one side of the table with a cue that short. Wait until you get a room big enough; go to the local pool room. Sorry, I just don't think its fun to play with a short cue. A table is a big expense and you should have the right size room to really enjoy the table. - Ray
How can I learn to shape my tip and what affect it has on the game? - Phoenix, AZ
It's easy. First you need to figure out the shape you play best with. Get a rasp and try to work the tip into the shape you like. I like to use a little water on the top of the tip to keep it from fraying. The shape of your tip is really important because of the effect the tip has on the cue ball at impact. Your stroke has a lot to do with how you want your tip. I shoot harder than others so I like a nickel shape. That shape helps grab the cue ball for me on impact. Try different tips and shapes to see the effect on a few stroke shots; like long draw shots or long cut shot with draw English. - Ray
I learned to play pool using a McDermott Cue, recently I bought
a Predator Cue. I am having trouble with the shaft size. The
Predator is larger than the McDermott, should I have the Predator
shaft turned down? - Moore, OK
Try to learn to play with that size
shaft first. If you can't get a handle on it then have it
turned down a little at a time. - Ray
What is your favorite table to play on commercially? - Corning, NY
The Gold Crown - Ray
What diameter shaft allows you to use the most english?
- Lafayette, CO
Around 12 mm; this will give you some control and a lot of movement. I wouldn't play with one that small. I like to use about 12.75 mm so I don't put unwanted spin on the object ball. - Ray
I'm looking to get a jump break stick and was wondering which is better a predator or sledgehammer? - Lafayette, CO
I like the Cue Tech. But I'm sure either cue would be a good one to break with. - Ray
What is your favorite table to play on commercially? - Corning, NY
The Gold Crown - Ray
How do you take care of a layered tip? - Pottstown, PA
You can shape the layered tips just as you would any tip. - Ray
I have been looking all over for 56' titanium cue, where
do you suggest I look, and is there another type of cue of
equal value that I can buy? - Falls Church, VA
I wouldn't know where to find a 56' cue they are mass produced. You might find a butt of a cue you like and have a shaft made. - Ray
The shaft end has bowed on my stick. Is it possible for me to remove the joint on the shaft end and put it on another straight shaft? - Roswell, NM
That is a little harder to do than you think. I would look for another shaft that matched or buy a new cue. - Ray
I am 6'3" and have a standard length pool cue. Someone
had mentioned I needed a longer pool cue shaft. What is your
opinion? - Lakeview, AL
I would have a cue made to fit you. By just having a longer shaft the cue will have more whip and will cause the cue ball to move more. - Ray
In your opinion what is the best method to clean Simonis
860 cloth. I use Triangle chalk because it's soft and easy
to keep on the tip. However, it gets the table and balls dirty
pretty quickly. What tip and chalk do you recommend for a
person that likes a medium soft tip? - Katy, TX
Try Elk Master it has chalk mixed in and will help you to not miss cue. I like to use a damp towel to remove the dust after I brush the table down and once or twice a week use a hand vacuum to pull the dust up. Make sure the vacuum doesn't put the cloth up. - Ray
Can you tell me roughly how much the table weighs? My table sits on the first floor of my house and my landlord is concerned that it might damage the wood of the floor. - Arlington, VA
I wouldn't know without seeing the table, but I wouldn't think it would be over 350. Tell your landlord that the weight of the table is spread over 32 square feet and it shouldn't hurt the floor. A person standing in one place would put more stress on the floor. - Ray
What is the color number sequence for 8-Ball? - Giddings,
TX
One is yellow, two is blue, three is red, four is purple, five is orange, six is green, seven is maroon, eight is black, nine is yellow stripe, ten is blue stripe, eleven is red stripe, twelve is purple stripe, thirteen is orange stripe, fourteen is green stripe and fifteen is maroon stripe. - Ray
What's the most popular brand of cue that is used by professional players? - Lynchburg, VA
On the pro level it would be Meucci or Shon. - Ray
What is the difference between a cheap cue and a more expensive one? - Houston, TX
The over all quality of every part of the cue, from the linen wrap to the way the tip is dressed. Everything matters. - Ray
I am considering making cue tips, but I am having trouble gathering information about equipment needed, the process, suppliers, etc. If you know anything about this, anyone that might be able to help, or can supply me with any related info at all I would appreciate it. - Acworth, GA
Try to contact Leonard Blowout. You can find him at www.bludworth.com. - Ray
I have fairly advanced woodworking skills and I was thinking
of making my own cue. However, I can't find any info on what
makes a "regulation" cue. Is there anything that's
illegal as far as size, weight, etc.? - Houston, TX
I think as long it is over 42 inches it's OK. That is the size for a jump cue to be legal. Weight and length is up to you. - Ray
I recently needed to get the tip of my stick replaced. I requested
a "soft" tip. However, it was just as hard as the
original tip. Is there some secret in getting a "soft"
tip? - USA
Soft, is hard to do. You will have a hard time getting the tip to keep it shape. I like a hard tip; it plays more consistent on every hit. A soft tip will spin the cue ball more and this will cause the cue ball to deflect more from the spin. - Ray
What is the best way to round off a new cue tip, should it be flat, round or something in-between? - Saint Augustine, FL
Use sandpaper and try to shape the tip like a nickel or dime. Play with it a little while and the tip will pack down so you will have to shape it a few times. If the tip doesn't hold the shape after a few times get a new tip. - Ray
How is the best and cheapest way to clean the scuff and
chalk marks off of the cue ball? - New Salisbury, IN
I like to use window cleaner. - Ray\
What makes a break cue different from a normal cue? - High Springs, FL
No much, I use a break cue so my playing cue tip doesn't get harder than I like causing me to miss cue more. Some break cues break down into a jump cue so you don't have to carrier a third cue. - Ray
I purchased a cue a few weeks ago and I would like to know
what I can do to keep the shaft as smooth as when I purchased
it. I wipe it off with a cotton cloth during and after play
but I still can't get the dirt and grime off. - Gainesville,
FL
The oil off you hand will help seal the shaft and keep it for getting dents with normal play. I like to use a damp cloth or paper towel to get the shaft off of the shaft after I play. You will never be able to keep it the same color it is now. Make sure you close the wood pours and don't get it to wet. - Ray
I am looking at purchasing a pool table for my family. I have the space for a 9' foot table in my game room. What size/brand table would be the most fun for a bunch of novices? - Mt. Vernon, WA
I would buy an eight foot table, this will give you room too if you just want your family to enjoy the game of pool. The brand is up to you and your pocket book. If you want it to hold up over time and looks isn't on the top of your list, go with a commercial table. All of the big table makers build a good table, so think about the service and dealers around you. - Ray
What is your opinion on titanium sticks? Which is better graphite or titanium? - Little Rock, AK
If I had to play with one I would go with graphite. I really don't like the hit you get from those type of cues, so I would look for a natural cue I liked. - Ray
I've taken a stick to several dealers and none of them know who made it; it has a porcupine at the bottom. - Brazile, IN
Without seeing cue I couldn't say for sure, but I would guess it is a Joe Popper cue. That sounds like his logo. - Ray
What kind of glue to use for my tip? - Peth Amboy,
NJ
Use super glue gel. - Ray
I have been reading about Predator shafts do you think
it's worth the price? Also, I'm a little confused about tips.
In some places I've read that soft tips generate the most
spin and give the best overall control, while others have
recommended medium or even hard tips. - Plano, TX
I wouldn't spend the money on the shaft, I don't think they help. A soft tip will grip the ball more and turn or spin the cue ball more. I don't like to spin the cue ball unless I have to. The more spin the harder it is to control the shot. You will control the cue ball better if you learn to put an aggressive stroke on the cue ball. I like to use triangle tips, they seem to keep their shape better longer and stay consistent on the hit longer. Some tips get harder the more you play with them. Whatever weight you like is fine as long as you can maintain a good stroke threw out the match. - Ray
What is the best method for sealing the cracks between the slate on a eight over table covered with 860? - Katy, TX
Go to your local Brunswick dealer and ask for the wax they use for there tables. It is a little like bees wax, but sets up a little harder. - Ray
What are the pro's and con's to using a light cue (17 oz.) vs. a heavy cue (20 oz./21 oz.)? - Yale, OK
I would bet your stroke is more powerful than the other players you know. A lighter cue makes you stroke threw the ball and you will tend to hit every shot with a little more power. The heavier cue the player seems to let the cue work the ball and roll the cue ball on more shots, I like the to feel every shot and most of the players I talk with on tour fell the same way. Great question. - Ray
What do you suggest for a first cue; company, weight, tip,
grip, wood type? I want to spend around $150? - Monmouth
County, NJ
You should be able to find a cue in that range. I would look around your area for a pro shop and see what they have to offer. For me to tell you what cue you should buy I would have to see you stroke. If you need help moving the cue ball I would go with a Meucci or Viking they seem to help with the cue ball. If you have a good stroke and move the ball around go with a steel joint. They shoot the ball a little straighter. - Ray
There is a rip in my felt, do you know of any ways to fix it? - Chico, CA
If there is an indention that causes balls to roll off the only thing I know to do is replace the cloth. - Ray
I have a full sized table at home, but when I'm out of town all of the places I go to have tiny tables. Will it affect my game to play on them? - Huntsville, AL
It will take a getting use to, but in no time at all you should play a lot better on the smaller table. The shots are closer and you will have more opportunities on the break. - Ray
What would you consider the best set-up for a cue as far as the tip, weight, taper and diameter of the shaft? - Herrin, IL
I like the balance to be 19 ¼ inches off the butt of the cue and weight to be 18 -19 oz. I like the shaft to weigh 4 oz and 12 ¾ mm. - Ray
I recently got a new table. On the first day I tried a
jump shot and put a little divot in the felt. Was it the cue
or an accident? - Huntsville, AL
By divot do you mean rip? If not, and it is a little dimple it will happen on every jump shot or any hard impact on the cloth. If it was a rip you might want to work on technique. - Ray
What do you think of Water Buffalo tips? Does it hold up? - Lady Lake, FL
I haven't tried that tip but I heard good things about it. Hope it works for you down the road. - Ray
What is the proper way to clean and maintain the shaft? - Brigantine, NJ
I use a damp cloth after I play and let dry before I put it back in my case. I don't know if this is the best way to clean a cue but it has worked for me over the years. I wipe down the cue after each use so it does get really dirty. - Ray
I am in the process of buying a pool table. I have selected a 4x8 Leisure Bay model but I wanted to get someone's opinion on that brand. Could you comment on that brand name or could you put me in contact with someone who could push me in the right direction? - Atlanta, GA
I don't really know that brand. I would contact your local Brunswick dealer. - Ray
What is preferable, 1 piece slate or 3? - Westchester, PA
Until Diamond came out with the Smart Table the three piece slat was better. The one piece slate was hard to keep level over the whole table. The three piece slate is easier to work with, and the three pieces are a little easier to move. - Ray
Do you feel an eight over is easier to run out on in straight pool or a nine foot table easier? I plan to try to qualify for the US Amateur and wonder if I should practice more on a regulation table or is the eight over I have in my house sufficient. - Katy, TX
Play as much as you can on whatever you can but, when you practice make sure you have goals and try to practice with a purpose. I think 8 -Ball on a bar table is harder than on a nine foot table but, playing on a 9 foot table will make you a better player. The 8 foot table is OK. I would try to play other players that make you focus to win. This will help you get ready for the U.S. Amateur on any table. - Ray
I've heard that playing on larger tables will improve your short table game, is this fact or fiction? Also, why do they call you Razor? - McConnells, SC
Bigger is better, if you learn to run out on a nine foot table the bar table will be a snap. They call me Razor because I cut balls in when most other Pros would play safe or bank the ball. - Ray
I see red circle, blue circle, blue dot and red dot cue
balls; what's the difference? - Florence, AL
The balls are marked to match the set of balls they come with. The balls are a little different and no cue ball is prefect. - Ray
I have a 35-40 year old Brunswick 2-piece Willie Hoppe
cue stick. Do you know its worth? - Galena, MO
I'm not a cue broker. I would look in the Cue Blue Book to see if they have that cue listed. - Ray
Why should I not use a rubber tip? - Jacksonville,
FL
They are junk! - Ray
I had a new tip put on my cue it is a soft tip and I'm having trouble adjusting to it; what is a good tip for a cue? - Plain City, OH
I like a Triangle tip. It's made from ground up leather and will play pretty much the same for the life of the tip. - Ray
I've been thinking about getting a Predator 314 shaft for my McDermott cue. Have you ever used one? What do you think of it? Will it really improve your game? – Herminie, PA
I have never owned one, but I've hit balls with one and I wouldn't spend the money on something that my even hurt your game. If I tell you a stone tip will help you and 50 top players are using them, would you buy that? Find a cue that you like and let other good players hit balls with the cue you have and see if they like the hit or if you should look for a new cue. – Ray
I recently started playing pool consistently. I bought
a titanium pool cue and it feels ok. Would you suggest something
else? – Mansfield, TX
You bought a nice break cue. I would buy a wood shaft cue that feels good. It will help you move the cue ball around and you will be a little more consistent. – Ray
How the does the ball return system on a billiard table work?
Is there a size or weight difference? – Atlanta,
GA
Some cue balls are a little bigger and some have a core magnet or ground medal mix in the cue ball. The smart table uses a light to detect the cue ball. – Ray
I was thinking about learning to replace my own cue tips instead of always having it done for me. Can you recommend a tip repair kit? – Largo, FL
I would get a tip lath before I would redo my tips. There is a little more to fixing a tip than a repair kit in a box will do. You have to make sure you keep the ferrule square and manicure the tip just right. – Ray
I know practice makes perfect, but I have trouble with English and positioning. I either rattle the ball out or miss it completely. I was wondering if some of this was due to a wood cue that came with the table? Should I upgrade my cue? – White Cloud, MI
A good cue would help but you might want to work on staying down on the shot. If you are pretty sure you stay down and your aim is correct, than I would buy a cue. – Ray
In your opinion what is the best way to keep Simonis 860 clean with the least amount of wear. Recently I began using a vacuum cleaner followed by a damp cloth to lightly wipe off the table. It seems to be effective and cloth friendly. Any suggestions on improving the procedure? - Katy, TX
That is they way I clean my tables. I get about three more months of play keeping the tables clean. I also would keep the light turned off unless you are playing. - Ray
What is the correct way to scuff your tip? I scuff mine perfectly,
yet after about three games it needs to be scuffed again.
- Huntsville, AL
I would get a new tip. If the tip doesn't hold chalk for more than 3 shots, you need a new one. When scuffing your tip, you want to make sure you keep an angle making sure not to flatten the top. - Ray
I have a stain on my pool table cloth; any ideas on removing this white spot on my green cloth would be helpful. - Fredericksburg, VA
You might want to ask a local clothing cleaner, best of luck. - Ray
I just started playing pool and use a house cue, it says 18 on it. Does this mean it is 18 oz.? When or why would I use a heavier stick? Would it help if I bought my own stick? - Greensboro, NC
Yes, that is the weight. Most house cues don't have the correct markings. The cue you use might be 18.9 or 18.1. I would give or take 1 ½ oz. either way for house cues; the weight is up to how it feels to you. If you enjoy playing and plan on getting better you need your own cue. There isn't a pro player out there that would want to play with a cue that did not fit them. - Ray
Is a light or heavy stick better? - Carrboro, NC
I would try both of then and see which cue moved the cue ball best for you. I like to use a cue that weighs 18.7. - Ray
How does the size of the tip of the cue affect the impact on the cue ball? - Rockville, MD
The bigger the tip the more of the cue ball surface the tip hits; this will give you less English. - Ray
I have a very nice cue and a guy at the pool hall offered to trade me for a Minnesota Fat butt with a Meucci shaft. What do you think? - Blountstown, FL
If you like your cue and enjoy playing with it then why trade? If your cue is right for you that is very important in playing. I don't know which is a better deal because I have not see the cues - use your best judgment. - Ray
I'd like your advice on a table purchase. I had been set on a 1" slate until speaking to the sales rep. I was told that unless you are a pro, you wouldn't know the difference between 1" and ¾" slate. I can have 1" slate added for an additional $100. Would you suggest I go with 1" slate? - Ft. Irwin, CA
Yes! And it does not take a pro to notice the difference. First, the table will weigh more. Weight is important when purchasing a table. Have you ever bumped against a table and saw the balls move? That table needs more weight. Also, the heavier the table the better the balls will come off the rails. - Ray
What is a good stick to start playing with as an amateur player? - Midlothian, TX
There are a lot of good cues out there. I would go to your local pro shop, tell them about how much you play and the amount you are willing to pay. I would get one without inlays so you will have a better-built cue for less money to start. If you have trouble finding a cue let me know, I might have one that fits your needs and wallet. Call Razor's Billiards at 270-683-7393 for more information. - Ray
Should the tip of a cue be round or flat, or does it depend on the player? - Newark, NJ
The tip is up to the player and as long as the tip holds chalk it will work. - Ray
How often should I shape my cue? How often should I use my tapper? - Akron, OH
Try to use the tapper before your miscue. I would shape the tip only if the shape was off or it wasn't holding chalk. - Ray
Is a Viper a good cue to use? Also, does a soft tip cue help more on English? - Fort Worth, TX
I have not heard of that brand, but if you like the hit then it is fine. A soft tip will put more English on the cue ball if it holds chalk well. You don't want a tip to be too soft that is loses its shape on contact. - Ray
I like a 21 oz. cue, but I see you use an 18.5 and have read that 18 and 19 oz. cues are easier to handle. What is the advantage to lighter sticks? - Salem, MA
It is just what you prefer. Efren uses a 20 to 21 oz. but Buddy Hall uses the same setup I do. Size has very little to do with it, I would try other weighted cues to make sure that is the best weight for you. - Ray
I am going to buy a more expensive cue and I'm trying to do all of my research. One thing I can't find much on is what the best tips are and the differences between them. I understand Le Pros are standard, but I have also heard about laminated tips. What do most pros play with? - Hurleyville, NY
Tips are a little hard to just say that this one or that one is the best. I play with a Triangle tip. I like these tips because the tip is more consistent. I haven't had a bad Triangle tip yet. Most pros seem to play with a Triangle or a Le Pro. The laminated tips are okay, but I seem to miscue with them; the longer I use it the worse it becomes. - Ray
How often should I use my shaper and tapper? - Akron, OH
Try to use it before you need it. I use mine when I see the tip getting a little shine and the chalk not covering well. If I'm in a match I will stop and take care of the tip. You should use the tapper whenever and wherever you need it. Don't wait to miscue and then tap your tip - you will give up an opportunity at the table. - Ray
What are the benefits of using a hard/medium/soft tip? - Columbia, MD
Soft tips are more for the players who like to spin their cue ball and like to take some impact off the ball. The harder you shoot the harder the tip should be to hold its shape. I like to use a hard tip. I like to feel the impact of even the softest shot. - Ray
I haven't had much luck with the tip on my cue. Does the ferule have anything to do with poor tips? - San Diego, CA
I would try a different tip before I go cutting off the ferule. Try Elkmaster if you want to have more English. Cues play differently, that is why there are so many brands to choose from. Find the one you like to most and try to stick with that cue. - Ray
What ways does the weight of the cue stick effect my game? - Blue Ridge Mountain, VA
The weight of the cue comes in when you are in a high-pressure spots. You would like a cue that feels light, or like a part of your body when you have a lot of heat on each shot. The weight also has a lot to do with how the cue stick gets through the cue ball for English. Most of the time this is what the Pros are looking for. - Ray
About how much do I need to spend to get a decent cue stick and where should I look? - Blue Ridge Mountain, VA
You should be able to find a cue for around $150.00. That is the range where you will find a good hitting cue that will help improve your game to start. Look online or at the local poolroom or pro shop. - Ray
Is there anything specific I should look for when shopping for a cue with a specific purpose? (shooting, breaking, jumping) - Sheboygan, WI
The weight of a cue is up to you if you feel it helps you use it. I like 12.7 mm tapered shafts. Wood cue that are 58 inches long are what I prefer because they have a better feel for me. When I look for a new cue I don't care about the tip because I will put on a tip I like anyway. We use a break cue to protect the tip on our playing cues and I have a little stiffer shaft on the break cue. What to look for if you are in the market is a cue that fits you and your game. If you like a longer cue try it. If you feel a heaver cue helps you keep you arm in line use it. Pool isn't a prefect science so if it makes you play better use it. - Ray
What is the proper way to maintain a cue stick shaft? - Tampa, FL
Take a damp rag and a little soap and clean the chalk and oil from the shaft. After it dries use 600 grit sand paper to close the wood and you should be ready to play. I like to use a damp rag after I play so it doesn't have a lot of day to day build up. - Ray
What is the best brand of cue that won't warp or break? - Grand Rapids, MI
I haven't seen a cue that will not break or warp. I like wood cues because of the feel you get from a natural cue. - Ray
I have a 21 oz. cue and feel good using it; the only thing is I have bad English. Could it be because it is too heavy? - Detroit, MI
Yes, but I would try different tips and different weighted cues before buying a new cue. - Ray
How and where can I find a good pool stick? - Landover, MD
Online is a great place to shop for a stick or at a billiards room with a pro shop. One of the rooms will have some info one cues that you can order. If you have a problem let me know and I will send you some info. - Ray
I always have trouble keeping a good scuff on my cue tip. Do you have any secrets or tips that might help? - Comfrey, MN
Yes, I do have a great tip - use your tip tapper more. The angle you chalk your tip has a little to do with how shaped the tip will stay. Always angle the chalk so that it is rounding your tip and not just chalking the top. - Ray
I can't get a bum tip off my cue. What's the best way to get it off so I can repair it? - Wheat Ridge, CO
If you don't know how to get the tip off, don't work on it. Find someone qualified to repair the cue. If you just want the BUM tip off, cut it off with a utility knife and make sure you clean all of the old tip from the ferrule before you glue on the new tip. - Ray
I am in the process of making a training aid on cut shots for beginners. I would like your opinion; go to www.pool-shark.net. - Mesa, AZ
I try not to talk about new products that I haven't tried myself. Hope it works for you. - Ray
I finally broke down and got a break jump cue. I have never used a jump cue, what do you suggest? Also, can you give me pointers for practice on the 9-ball break on a 9ft table? - San Marcos, CA
Practice with the jump cue and you should pick up that shot pretty fast. The break, take it slow and work on hitting the contact point on the 1-ball. - Ray
In your opinion does an ivory ferrule have any advantages whatsoever other than value? Also, have you ever tried a Moori tip and what did you think? - Colorado Springs, CO
No, we have other ferrules that play better than ivory. Yes, I tried the tips and they weren't for me. - Ray
How often should I change my cue tip? Are they changed routinely or after they are worn down quite a bit? - Belton, KY
I never want to change mine. If you start to miss cue it's time to give the tip up. - Ray
What type of a tip would give me the most effective use of English on the cue ball? - Huntington Beach, CA & Nederland, TX
I like to use the shape of a nickel for my tip. - Ray
I am in the market for a new pool stick. I don't want to spend a lot on a stick. Do you have any suggestions on choosing a stick? - Memphis, TN
There are a lot of good low cost pool cues out there now. Go to any pro shop, look through the cues and pick a cue you like, that is most important. Balance and the taper of the shaft should be the reason you buy, looks should come into play after that. - Ray
I have been told that if I want to get any better I have to buy a better cue. I would only like to spend around $200, $300 max, could you give me some insight on some cues? Does the cue really make a difference? - Warren, OH
Yes, a good cue can make the difference in how fast you improve. There are so many cues out there now that $200 will get you a fine cue. Just make sure you pick on for the hit and just for the looks. I also sell cues, Falcon and may others. I will send you some information. - Ray
Do you recommend having a 7, 8,or 9-foot table? I am an average player, Level 5, and want to improve my game. - Spring Valley, IL
If you have the room and money go with the 9-foot table. If you can't afford to get a commercial 9-foot table get the 8. The commercial tables play better and hold their value longer. - Ray
Please tell me more about tips. I can
hardly find any information on maintaining the tip. - Boothwyn,
PA
What should a correct top look like and what tools are necessary
to keep it properly tuned? - Wurtsboro, NY
Tip tools are used to condition the surface of the tip. Finding the tool that gives you the best bite without screwing up your tip is the trick. I like two tip tools. The Tapper and the Tip Pick. The Tapper is best used when you place the Tapper on the tip with the shaped of the tip and turn in half circles. Do not tap. The Pick is exactly what it sounds like. How hard you hit the tip is up to you, but too hard and your tip repair guy is going to see you a lot more than he should. There are a lot of tips to choose from. The first thing is to look at is your stroke. If you like to hit the cue ball with a lot of force I would go with a hard tip. Tips are something you have to get a feel for, finding the right tip takes time. I like to shape my tip like a nickel and I wouldn't take a tip off your cue until you have had a good chance to break it in. - Ray
Have you used a Predator cue? Do you like them? - Temple, TX
I have used a Predator. No, I don't like them. But this decision is up to each player. I'm sure some Pros love them Jimmy Wetch played with one when he was with Meucci and played great. - Ray
I am looking to purchase a cue and was wondering how expensive I should go. I mean, after what price are you just paying for the inlay work? - Huntsville, AL
You should be able to find a cue in the $150 to $200 range. Falcon has a nice line about $180. - Ray
My dad and I want to get a really nice pool table. We don't think we have enough room for a 9-foot, should we look into an oversized 8? - Pittsburgh, PA
You need a room 19 feet by 15 feet to house a 9-foot table comfortably. If I were purchasing a table I would go for the biggest table I could fit in the room, but still have enough room to play. I suggest buying a commercial table, if you can afford it I suggest purchasing a Gold Crown table. - Ray
How long is a jump cue supposed to be? - Rushville, MO
I think it is 36", pros are not able to use them in most tournament play, so I am not for sure. - Ray
Do you think that the inexpensive cues (under $150) are made of higher quality than they use to be? They seem to hold up better than say 20 years ago especially the new fiberglass types. - Staunton, VA
Yes, but I think they need to work on the ferrule on that range of cue. I see a lot of players with burn marks and they tend to crack a lot. - Ray
What do you, if you do, see in a laminated tip? My feelings about laminated tips are they are taking the good layers (or same hardness) out of a so-so hide and gluing them together to make a good tip. This, to me, only puts glue on the crown of the tip that should be leather. - Prairie DuSac, WI
It sounds like you know the science better than me. I like the one-piece tip because glue will not hold chalk as well as leather. I seem to miscue with the layered tips. - Ray
What do you think about laser-guided cues? Are they a good tool for beginners? - Arlington, TX
I think any tool that will help someone learn is good. - Ray
I am currently in the market for a pool cue. I want a professional's opinion on which joint to get. I see some have brass others stainless steel. I know feel is the ultimate measure but what do you use and what is the most desired? - Scottsdale, AZ
Level of play is something I would need to know. I like the steel for more cue ball control. If I was a beginner I would buy a non-metal jointed cue to help move the cue ball. - Ray
I've just purchased a new billiard table and the business owner says that I'll get nap drag on new cloth. Is nap drag something you have to adjust to? - California
I have never heard of that. I know if the table is a little off you will have a speed change end to end. - Ray
Is there a downfall to having a shaft that is too small in diameter? Also is there any disadvantage to have a cue that is too light or too heavy? - St. Petersburg, FL
A smaller tip will move the cue ball more. The weight is up to you and what you can handle. I like to look at the balance first, it should be about 19 inches up from the butt of the cue. - Ray
I am planning on getting a new cue ($430). I wanted to know of a few good cues, any suggestions? - Lincoln Park, NJ
Go to the pro shop a look around; there are a lot of nice cues now. In the past you only had 4 or 5 in that range but now I can't list them all. Ask around and if you know someone with a cue you like ask to hit a few balls to see how it gets threw the cue ball. You should hit balls with the cue before you buy it. - Ray
What kind of tip is best to use? I have a Falcon with a mid tip; how do I know what English to use when I shoot? - Horn Lake, MS
Slow down, the cue you have is fine, the tip is OK if you don't miss cue with it. Keep hitting balls and watch what each one does after contact. Good luck. - Ray
What is the difference between a red circle and blue circle cue ball? - Springfield, IL
Weight, I like the red circle. - Ray
I have seen many tables on the Internet that look like they are of high quality, but no name brands. Have you ever seen any of these tables? -- Perryville, MO
I haven't seen those tables. I would go for a name you know and can trust. This is a major purchase and I would stay with a local dealer who will stand behind the product and service for the table. - Ray
I'm considering buying a breaking cue. What should I look for in construction and length? - Tarpon Springs, FL
I like to use the same set up as my playing cue. Look for a strong joint and make sure the shaft doesn't have a lot of play. The more play the more unwanted English the cue ball will have. - Ray
I have an eight-foot table at home and practice on it daily. I play on a regulation table and find 14-1 is easier on the larger table because the balls tend to spread out a bit better. Do you find this to be the case? - Katy, TX
Yes, I think pool games like 14.1 and 8-Ball are a lot easier on the bigger table. - Ray
What is the best way to maintain the shaft of the cue? - Mullica Hill, NJ
Clean the shaft after you play and make sure before you put it away it is dry. - Ray
My shaft came with a LePro tip as standard. I hear a lot about Moori tips. Are they better than LePro? Also, which tip hardness do you prefer? - Clarkridge, AR
They are only better if you like them better. I like the triangle tip it seems to hit more consistent on every shot. - Ray
I'm looking to invest some money in a good pool cue that is not too expensive, maybe a few hundred dollars. I'm trying to stay within a budget. - Las Vegas, NV
You have a lot of good cues to choose from in that price range. You can give me a call at my poolroom I have 5 Falcons I would like to sell, 270-683-7393. - Ray
What's the best way to go about buying a cue that's right for me? - Philadelphia, PA
The best way is to ask other players what they like and why. Try to see if someone you know will let you try their cue and hit balls with as many different cues you can to see what you like about the cues. - Ray
I am in my third session in APA Pool Leagues my first session I ended up 3-10, the second session I ended up 11-2 and set third overall. Now we are into the new session and I am back to 0-3 and don't know what happened. Has anything like this ever happened to you? Could it be because I am playing with a brand new cue I have not gotten used to? - Salina, KS
Yes, the cue might not be for you. I would practice more with it but if your game is still off, look for a better cue. - Ray
I am looking for a good cue. I was wondering what "professional taper" is; and why did you choose an 18.7 oz cue? - Tampa, FL
Pro taper is when the shaft has the same
mm going down the shaft about 16 to 18 inches. I use an 18.7
because I like a light cue when the heat is on and with a
heavier cue I don't feel the cue ball and I lose feel. - Ray
I like the Super Pro. - Ray
Work on your stroke, it happens to everyone
but the better your stroke the less you will miss cue. - Ray
If you have tried a ball polisher already, I suggest to buy new balls; they will play better and if the old balls are not all the same size you would be better off to get new balls. - Ray
Can you tell me the difference between a soft, medium and hard tip; and how will each react with the cue ball? - Herminie, PA
The softer the tip the more English the cue ball will have. Think of it as how fast the cue ball leaves the tip and how much of the impact you feel on each shot. The longer the cue ball stays on the tip the more it will grab and the more it will spin the cue ball. - Ray
What is the best but cheapest pool table? - Huron, SD
Every table maker has a lower end line that plays well. I would go with Gandy. - Ray
I just switched from a cue with no wrap to a cue with a linen wrap, it feels like the cue is slipping from my grip, how can I adjust for a linen wrap without over gripping the cue? - San Marcos, CA
You need you give it time. Ask me again in one month if it doesn't feel better. - Ray
I'm a beginner looking to buy my first cue. I'm also only 5' tall and the standard 57" is too long. Is there a rule of thumb on arm length to cue length? - Houston, TX
I would try to get used to a cue 56 inches or longer. I've played short and tall players and I think the bigger problem is a cue to short. You need a cue that will help you reach long shots that you are able to stroke the cue with control. - Ray
I understand that the softer the tip the more English, but what is the difference between a dime radius and nickel radius and what effect will it have on the cue ball? - Memphis, TN
The smaller the point of impact the more the English. The more of the surface of the tip that contacts the cue ball the less rotation it will put on the cue ball. - Ray
Do you use a breaking cue, if so what is the best one that you have broke with. Do you think Predator shafts are any better than what Viking puts on their cues? Also, I would like to thank you for your pro advice; you're the only pro that I know of that answers question online. - Dallas, TX
Thanks, glad to help. I've had to tapper the shaft a little more on all the Predator cues that I've played with and found that the shafts on most production cue are okay after I have the tapper work. I break with a McDanails cue and now play with one. - Ray
I play with a Meucci and a Cuetec. I need a new cue with a smooth and soft hit like my Meucci but without the high price tag. Do you have any suggestions? - Owatonna, MN
Meucci has a lot of low-end cues that play as well as the high dollar cues. I would look up his web site to see if you like any of the low end cues. A lot of players think the fewer inlays you have in a cue the better the hit. Cue Sticks International has a lot of cues to choose from. - Ray
What is the regulation size billiard table for tournaments? - Houston, TX
Regulation size is a marketing thing to sell tables. The table the Pros play on in the world tournaments is 4 1/2 X 9. The number 1 selling table is the 4 X 8, because most homeowners don't have a room big enough for the 9-foot. - Ray
I'm buying a $2,000 seven-foot table for my family room. I'm a decent "touch" player so am debating whether to upgrade the new table's felt to Simonis cloth. I love the control it gives me when covering bigger tables, but wonder if its "overkill" upgrade for such a small table? - Pomona, CA
2000 or 200 I would have it on my table. Most dealers don't play very good and wouldn't know what to tell you. I have a poolroom and every bar table has Simonis. When you go through life go with the best when you can. - Ray
