256 teams signed up and filled the 1st Annual Scotch Doubles National Championship board over the weekend, and two men
from Covington, Louisiana fought their way through the field to the title. Derrick Lam, who captured 5th Place at the 1998 Camel 8-Ball Classic, and Steve Whitaker whose return trip to
the National Championships seeded him with his best friend, will head home happy after a $5,000 payday.
"Derrick and I learned how to play pool together, and it certainly helps when you
think alike and share similar strategies," said Steve, a Skill Level 5. His partner, with the same handicap, shared the thought and spoke of his excitement to be in Vegas APA-style again.
"Where else can you go to shoot in a tournament like this? The APA puts on the best big tournaments, provides the best competition and pays the most money. You can bet we'll be back!" Lam and Whitaker said that the best was saved for last, as they
faced Ontario, California members Jose Fach Garcia and Allyson Olness in the final on Sunday. Garcia, a Skill Level 7, and Olness, a 3, earned $2,500 and second place for their
efforts. The APA paid more than $25,000 to the full 512-person field, who competed in a maximum combined Skill Level 10 alternate shot format.
