APA 9-Ball Shootout Singles Championships
Three champions were crowned Saturday afternoon in the
$100,000 APA 9-Ball Shootout.
In the green tier (SL 1-3), it was Michael Richards (SL 3) of McCook,
Neb., defeating Robert Rose (SL 4) of Trenton, N.J., 25-17. Rose advanced
to the final round with a victory over Layla Addison (SL 3) of Pinellas
Park, Fla. Richards advanced after defeating Charlie Mahlmeister (SL 4)
of Casey, Ill.
In the white tier (SL 4&5), Michael Mason
Jr. (SL 5) of Indianapolis, Ind., defeated Rich Denham (SL 5) of Wesley
Chapel, Fla., 38-18. Mason
Jr. defeated Scott Hudson (SL 6) of Richmond, Va., to advance to the finals,
while Denham advanced with a win over Edgar Montano (SL 5) of Austin,
Tex.
In
the black tier (SL 6-9), Richard Schmiegel Jr. (SL 9) of Saginaw, Mich.,
defeated Mike Billodeaux (SL 7) of Shreveport, La. Schmiegel Jr.
advanced to the final round with a victory over Paul Graclik (SL 8) of
Colorado Springs, Colo. Billodeaux advanced after a win over Tommy Hershey
(SL 6) of Gathersburg, Md.
Each champion received a prize package worth $10,000 in cash and prizes.

More than 9,000 amateur shooters attempted to qualify
for the 2003 APA 9-Ball Shootout Singles Championship in their local league
area. Nearly 1,300 poolplayers made it to the regional level of the 9-Ball
Shootout before the field was whittled down to 92 men and women competing
this weekend for 9-Ball crowns in each of the three skill level tiers.
