Why do you love APA? Tell us in a 30 second to 2 minute video and you could win an all expenses paid trip to Las Vegas during the 2013 APA National Team Championships! It’s that simple! Use your camera, cell phone, video camera—whatever you’ve got—to film the video. Feel free to be serious or funny, just as long as you tell us Why YOU Love APA!

Each approved entrant will receive an APA t-shirt. Two Runners-Up will receive an APA prize package valued at $300! You must be a current APA member, age 21 or older, to enter. The video must be appropriate for all ages and not contain any copyrighted material.

2013 NSC 9-Ball Shootout Final Standings

The finals of the 9-Ball Shootout were held April 27th with three new champions being crowned.

In the finals of the Green Tier (SL 1-3) Tom Williamson, of Billerica, Mass, defeated Cheri Schroth of Murfreesboro, Tenn.

In the finals of the White Tier (SL 4-5), Eddie Conklin, Jr. of Bayonne, N.J., defeated Roger Doyen of Brandon, Fla.

In the finals of the Black Tier (SL 6-9), David Apollos of Gallatin, Tenn., defeated Jan Mierzwa of Garfield, N.J.

Each of the three champions took home a $10,000 prize package, while the Runners-up received a prize package worth $5,000.

This year 310 players competed in the 9-Ball Shootout.

2013 NSC 8-Ball Classic Final Standings

The finals of the 8-Ball Shootout were held April 27th with three new champions being crowned.

In the finals of the Blue Tier (SL 2-3), Faith Rubin of Fayetteville, N.C., defeated Joe Fickett of Chicago Ridge, Ill.

In the finals of the Yellow Tier (SL 4), Steven Davis of Minneapolis, Minn., defeated Clayton Fulcher of Loganville, Ga.

In the finals of the Red Tier (SL 5), David Templeton of Jackson, Mo., defeated Wilson Chung of South San Francisco, Calif.

In the finals of the Purple Tier (SL 6-7), Dustin Gunia of Omaha, Neb., defeated Nathan Moore of Warren, Mich.

Each of the three champions took home a $15,000 prize package, while the Runners-up received a prize package worth $9,000. This year 489 players competed in the 8-Ball Classic.

Jack & Jill Doubles Championship

In the finals of the 2013 Jack & Jill Doubles Championship on April 26, Long Shots (Jaime Guajardo & Amber Kwasigroch) of Joilet, Ill., defeated Ride the Rail (James Giorella & Evaughn Hall of Athens, Ga. The victory earned them a $5,000 payday. As Runners-up, Ride the Rail took home $3,000.

Jeffrey Woods Returns to Pool for his Grandmother

After playing pool from 1993-97, Jeffrey Woods of Jefferson, Ga. decided to take a break to spend time with his family and coach sports with his sons. About 3 years ago, Jeffrey decided to take up the sport again since his children are older and has been playing ever since. Another reason he got back into playing is because his grandmother told him not to quit until he made it to Vegas. She passed away about 18 years ago and Jeffrey has made it his mission since.

“I competed in the 2012 8-Ball Classic, as well as the 2012 9-Ball Doubles Championship,” Woods said. “I didn’t do as well as I would have liked at Singles, but my partner Kevin Duncan and I placed 7^th in the 9-Ball Doubles Championship. It helps that I’ve been to Vegas before because now I know where we are shooting and what’s going on.”

Jeffrey is competing in the 8-Ball Classic Red Tier. He hopes to win, but his goal is to just do his best in the tournament and see what happens. In addition to the tournament action, Jeffrey plans to do some shopping for his sons.

Husband and Wife Duo Playing in 9-Ball Shootout

Frank and Kelly Quattlebaum from Kennesaw, Ga., both qualified for the 2013 9-Ball Shootout. The husband and wife duo are very excited to be competing in the National Singles Championships together. Frank previously qualified two years ago and placed 17^th in the tournament, however, this is Kelly’s first time qualifying for an APA national event. Every day for the past three months, Kelly continued to wear out the cloth on their home pool table practicing for the Championships.

The two began playing APA in 2009. While Frank has been playing pool since he was just 7 years old, Kelly started with the sport when she joined APA. They love the competition of APA, as well as playing in the tournaments. Kelly is Team Captain of their 8-Ball team, while Frank captains their 9-Ball team.

“I have such a wonderful wife,” Frank said. “Because of the APA we have come to know and spend time with some of the best players in the world.”

Frank is competing in the Black Tier (SLs 6-9), while Kelly is competing in the White Tier (SLs 4-5). They both hope to win, but are also looking to have fun and improve their game.

“Having competed in Vegas before helped me learn how to handle pressure, stress, excitement and other situations much better and I have passed this information onto Kelly as well,” Frank said.

Sue Okowita and Randy Barton Reunite After 30 Years

Sue Okowita and Randy Barton from Ontario have known each other for about 30 years now. As a child, Sue was best friends with Randy’s sister. For over 25 years, Sue lost touch with the family though. Once Sue started playing CPA, one evening she started talking to a gentleman named Randy. They talked about where they grew up and realized they lived on the same street, then Randy mentioned his sister and it hit them both who the other was!

Randy asked Sue to play in a Jack & Jill tournament with him and the rest is history! Sue hadn’t been to Vegas before in her 12-year CPA career, so she was up for the challenge. The two complemented each other very well in the games and won the tournament.

“We complement each other,” Sue said. “We don’t criticize each other’s shot. We learn from each other. If I do something incorrectly Randy will say you me, ‘the other way you could have played that shot is…’ He never makes a condescending comment to me and I don’t to him. We work through our mistakes and we don’t get angry with each other.”

Randy has been playing in the CPA for about 30 years; he was one of the very first members to join in his area. He still plays on five different teams. It took him 27 years of playing in the League before finally making it to Vegas. He’s now competed in the National Singles Championship, 8-Ball Open National Team Championship, 8-Ball Doubles Championship and now the Jack & Jill Championship with Sue.

On the to-do list for Sue when she returns from Vegas is reconnecting with Randy’s sister. They both will continue to play CPA several times a week, as they love the people you meet while playing.

“I have met friends for the last 13 years and I have kept in touch with a lot of them,” Sue said. “I also enjoy the competition. It challenges you when you play a 6 or 7 and you are also challenged when you play a 2 or 3. You never know where the ball will end up.”

Despite Busy Schedule Jessica Schuddekopf Finds Time for Pool

How does one find time for nursing school, gymnastics and pool? Good time management skills, according to 27-year-old Jessica Schuddekopf of Clifton Park, N.Y. Jessica also has a Master’s Degree in Health Education.

“I play in the League on Mondays, a tournament on Wednesdays and practice by myself on Thursdays,” Schuddekopf said. “I try to play on the weekends too. When I play in tournaments I try to pick up on how the better players do things and I ask for advice.”

She originally started playing pool in college, when her dorm room was next to a lounge with a pool table. She’s always loved sports and has continued to improve her game. She qualified for Regionals as a skill level 4, played in Regionals as a skill level 5 and since moved up to a skill level 6. She’s competing in the 9-Ball Shootout Black Tier.

Although she just joined APA about two years ago, this is Jessica’s second time qualifying for an APA national event. She competed in the 2012 National Team Championships 9-Ball Division.

“I’m most looking forward to seeing how I do as a skill level 6 in the Black Tier (SLs 6-9) and hopefully making it to the money rounds,” Schuddekopf said. “Having competed in Vegas before gives me a better idea of what to expect this time around.”
