Arte’s Smarties of Phoenix, Ariz., is the first Ladies Division team from their area to compete in the National Team Championships. The team was formed about a year ago by their League Operators, Doug and Gina Nowlin.
The Team Captain, Arlene (Arte) Lewis, has been playing in the APA for over 8 years and currently captains four teams. This is her second time in Vegas in that time. Erin Hammill (Arte’s daughter) has been playing in the APA since 1997 and this is her third trip to Vegas. Christine Hanson is newer to the game, but is making her third trip to the National Team Championships. Diane Loram is the new girl in town. Her teammates say not to underestimate her. She can play with the “big boys.”
“Determination, not giving up and supporting one another has contributed to our success,” Arte said. “In addition, one should not underestimate the drive and determination of lower skilled players.”
They brought along their husbands to Las Vegas as their cheering squad. They’re all poolplayers, which truly makes it a family sport. The team supports each other and are good friends, which keeps them playing together.
